Glasgow Art GalleriesA city with much to offer in the way of galleries and exhibitions of art, Glasgow is famous for its strong association with Scottish artist and designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Those who are fans of Mackintosh will likely be inspired by a visit to the renowned Mackintosh Gallery on Renfrew Street, where his life is clearly documented and accompanied by many original works of art.

Other noteworthy galleries in Glasgow include the Centre for Contemporary Arts (CCA) on Sauchiehall Street, which resides within the listed Grecian Chambers building and is known for its outstanding contemporary pieces. The centrally located Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) on Queen Street is another commendable Glasgow venue and is filled with paintings and sculptures, as is the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum on Argyle Street and the Hunterian Art Gallery and Museum at the university.

The Centre for Contemporary Arts (CCA) is to be found between Renfrew Street and Sauchiehall Street, and comes with many modern multimedia displays. With numerous exhibitions staged throughout the year, as well as various theatrical events, concerts, lectures, a bookshop and a café, the Centre for Contemporary Arts (CCA) is highly regarded in Scotland and is situated close to the School of Art, the Kings Theatre and the Film Theatre.

Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA)

Established in the mid-1990s, the Gallery of Modern Art can be found in the heart of Glasgow city centre, close to Buchanan Street train station and the Princes Square shopping centre. Housed in a historic neoclassical building that dates back to the late 18th century, attractions include impressive collections which are spread over four spacious galleries and comprise paintings, sculptures, classical architecture and period features. Big-name artists exhibited here include the likes of Andy Warhol, David Hockney and also Sebastiao Salgado.

Intermedia Gallery

The Intermedia Gallery is an interesting exhibition space and is operated by Glasgow City Council. This large venue features regular multimedia exhibitions, including paintings, sculptures, theatrical performances and popular local events. The Intermedia is also close to a number of other notable galleries, such as the Transmission, and is nearby the St. Enoch train station, as well as the Tron Theatre and St. Andrew's Cathedral.

Street Level Photoworks

Street Level Photoworks is an excellent photographic gallery residing in the East End of the city. Attractions at the Street Level Photoworks include regular exhibitions, photo workshops, courses, lectures, a darkroom and other photographic facilities. Those arriving by train will find that the St. Enoch railway station is to hand.

Mackintosh Gallery

The Mackintosh Gallery is one of the most stylish art galleries in the city and is housed in the Glasgow School of Art, on Renfrew Street, where it is within easy walking distance of the Cowcaddens train station. Founded in 1845, the art school itself is a stunning building and was actually designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh. With many interesting paintings, drawings, exhibitions, Mackintosh pieces and designs, regular guided tours of the School of Art are available, although the Mackintosh Gallery remains the only part of the building officially open to members of the general public.

Compass Gallery

The city's very first dedicated contemporary art centre, the Compass Gallery is now a popular commercial venue and is located on West Regent Street, within the city centre itself. With many paintings, original prints, ceramics, sculptures and temporary exhibitions, the Compass is full of excellent art work and is conveniently sited close to the Cowcaddens train station.

Roger Billcliffe Fine Art is one of the city's most popular commercial art venues and can be found in the heart of the city centre, close to the Charing Cross train station, the Glasgow School of Art, the Buchanan Street SPT Subway and the Buchanan Shopping Centre. The Roger Billcliffe comes with a large selection of paintings, ceramics, sculptures and glasswork.
